Here are two demos I have produced from my student radio shows. The first, 'Journalistic', focuses more on news stories and the news agenda, whilst the second, 'Personality', is more light-hearted and chatty. I have also added a track list underneath for easy listening (if needed).
0.00-1.02 I discuss the danger of the Trump presidency wherein everything he disagrees with is branded ‘Fake News’.
1.02-1.06 I introduce the KCL Radio President Inès.
1.06-1.41 KCL Radio President Inès, speaking to me about the diversity of presenters KCL Radio has signed up for this year including exchange students and PhD students too. We also revel in the lack of technical issues experienced during the first week of broadcast.
1.41-2.36 Discussing an incredible story of a 9-year-old girl spraying Fruit Shoot on a thug who was attacking her mother.
2.36-2.47 A short clip of myself reporting from the Donald Trump Protest and how the crowds are still massive, despite passing the scheduled end time of the event.
2.47-3.19 I reflect on the busy and poignant Donald Trump Protest after his controversial Muslim ban, coupled with Theresa May’s silence. I explain that one could hear many chants whilst there.
3.19-3.28 A short clip of one of the rather British chants ‘Donald Trump is a wanker’
3.28-3.52 I discuss the power of positive media coverage of the Donald Trump Protest and how that is not always the case for all protests and strikes.
3.52-4.16 A clip of another of the chants ‘No Trump, No Brexit, No racist EU exit’. I go on to explain how it’s wrong to conflate all issues together, and how a chant like this can be damaging to leave voters who had come to this protest.
4.16-4.36 I announce that the Central London Tube Strikes had been called off. I claim that I actually enjoyed them, as it meant my train journey home was significantly shorter due to the fewer stops in operation.
4.36-4.44 A link during Galvanize by Chemical Brothers where I claim that Trump’s actions has meant I have not been able to talk about Brexit. I imply that this will be the next topic.
4.44-4.58 I read out a list of former US presidents and the long wait till their state visit (or in some cases none at all). I suggest that Donald Trump has been bribed with this offer in order to give the UK the best possible trade deal.
4.58-5.18 I pettily observe that on the Twitter search bar, after typing POTUS, his predecessor Obama comes up first and how this must be infuriating the Donald. I recommend that we all keep clicking on Obama’s profile first in the hope that it stays this way.
5.18-5.33 I unpick the hypocrisy of Leave supporting newspapers rubbishing the 114 MPs who voted against the triggering of Article 50. I make the case that should sovereignty ring true, they should actually be reflecting their constituency and that only 52% of MPs should really have voted for it.
5.33-5.53 As the Nokia 3310 is relaunched, I lay into the people who go around tweeting that they miss those days of the Nokia 3310 era, considering they are constantly switching between various social media sites.
5.53-6.39 After a popular Internet trend of millenials clicking ‘going’ on various secondary school parents’ evening Facebook events, I explain that should we have all been using Nokia 3310s we would not have found out about it. I then discuss the absurdity of this trend alongside guests Farrah and Georgia (who initially took the question of going to Parents’ Evenings this week literally).
6.39-6.54 I read out a comment from a listener Shanay, who says that I should use a Nokia 3310 for a week. I explain that it would be difficult, whilst Georgia adds that I would not know what to do with my life not being able to go on Snapchat. Perhaps an intervention is necessary?
0.00-0.38 I rant about the pointlessness of the majority of birthday cards wherein people don’t write long, heartfelt messages, but simply sign it or just write best wishes. I question whether we should really be hanging onto these as part of the trash or treasure segment.
0.38-0.48 I introduce KCL Radio President Inès, who has stored all of the birthday cards she has received.
0.48-1.07 Inès, KCL Radio President explains that she just likes hoarding stuff, having done so since 2001. She tells me she hopes to do so her whole life.
1.07-1.33 I discuss #SeanSpicerFacts where mistruths were being spread by the US Press Secretary and give my own ‘Sean Spicer Fact’.
1.33-2.03 Georgia, another presenter on KCL Radio, discusses the captions on Love Heart sweets where one of hers said ‘Too Much’, reminding her of a song from Kehlani. Has she just signalled a music break?
2.03-2.26 I rant about the stupidity of Trump’s recent policies aimed at dividing us all. The policies were incompetent but has it had the desired effect?
2.26-2.45 I describe how discussing the Donald Trump Protest for the past sixty minutes has been a power hour. I then define how I actually use the phrase ‘power hour’.
2.45-3.03 A chant I came across under the caption ‘How Arabs Protest’.
3.03-3.31 I evaluate the greatness of this protest chant and link Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers. I explain that the poll results for this week’s trash or treasure segment will be revealed next.
3.31-3.59 I ask my guests Farrah and Georgia who they believe won the trash or treasure poll segment for this week. The subject in question was ‘Valentine’s Day clichés’ (Such as roses, red hearts, chocolate boxes etc.). Farrah claims everyone is too cynical nowadays, Georgia felt ‘it’s cute innit’ but what did the listeners decide?
